Cabergoline is a long-acting ergot derivative agonist with a high affinity for D2 receptors. Side effects are similar to other agonists and include dizziness, hypersomnolence, headache, nausea, and orthostatic hypotension.
In a six month study comparing cabergoline to placebo as adjunctive therapy to levodopa for patients with motor fluctuations, cabergoline allowed an 18% reduction in levodopa dose compared with 3% in placebo-treated patients. Motor function improved 16% in the cabergoline group compared with 6% in the control group. "On" time was significantly increased and associated with a corresponding decrease in "off' time and "on time with dyskinesia".
