Chelation TherapyProponents of chelation therapy suggest that it is effective in preventing complications of diabetes. Chelation therapy uses chelating agents such as EDTA administered intravenously to restore proper circulation by removing the plaque from arterial walls. Therapists claim that people with diabetes who receive intravenous EDTA chelation therapy have less amputations, less blindness, less renal dialysis, and other complications of diabetes, than those on conventional treatments. Furthermore, oral chelators such as vitamin C, garlic, zinc, and certain amino acids like cysteine and methionine, are also useful in protecting the cardiovascular system. In a Canadian study involving diabetic patients with unusually high levels of iron, Dr. Paul Cutter chelated thirty-two patients with deferoxamine (a chelating agent used to remove iron), resulting in twenty-four patients being totally free of medication in eight to thirteen weeks. Dr. Cutler believes that chelating with deferoxamine could cure one-third of adult cases of diabetes.
