Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the entire body, including the joints. The joints typically involved are the hands and feet, wrists, ankles and knees. Somewhere between 1 and 3 per cent of the population is affected, female patients outnumber males almost 3:1 and the usual age of onset is 20-40 years, although rheumatoid arthritis may begin at any age.
