The anti-Vata diet
emphasizes warm, heavy and moist foods that give strength. Eat several small meals, mildly spiced and with only a few different types of foods per meal. Don't eat when you are nervous or worried. Avoid dry, light and artificial foods and irregular diet.
Dietary considerations include:
-
Include wheat,
oats and brown rice. Avoid corn grains, buckwheat, millet, rye, barley, granola and dried grains.
-
Include vegetables
such as carrots, beets, parsley, radish, potatoes, tomatoes, fresh corn, fresh peas, turnips, artichokes and okra
in your diet. Avoid raw onions, mushrooms, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, asparagus, spinach, eggplant,
and lettuce. Garlic can be used freely.
-
Small amounts of fruits are
OK. Avoid dried fruit, melons, cranberries or apples.
-
Avoid beans.
They aggravate vata. However, mung beans and tofu (made from soy
beans) are OK.
-
Fish, chicken and turkey are
OK. Avoid lamb, pork and beef.
-
Dairy products (except for ice cream) are helpful when warm and spiced. Drink milk by itself. Fermented dairy products, such as yogurt, are
preferred.
-
Nuts: Small amounts of raw or lightly roasted nuts and
seeds may be taken.
-
Oils:
Recommended oils: Sesame, almond, olive, avocado, peanut, mustard and coconut oils.
Avoid margarine, canola, corn, soy and safflower oil. (Note:
Although ayurveda considers coconut oil to be OK, the western
thinking is to avoid coconut oil due to its high saturated fat
content that can be easily converted to cholesterol in the body. We
recommend olive oil and sesame oil.)
-
Sweeteners such as maple syrup, raw sugar, molasses, honey and fructose (fruit sugar) are
OK. Avoid refined white sugar. Most spices are permitted, including garlic, fennel, nutmeg, ginger, basil, cumin, cinnamon, fenugreek, mint, black pepper, cayenne, mustard and horseradish.
-
Plenty of fluids
are helpful for Vata-type illnesses. Milk, herbal teas and sour fruit juices are
recommended. Small amounts of alcohol or herbal wines are sometimes suggested before or with meals.
