Rheumatoid Arthritis

Psychological Interventions for Arthritis

A Stanford University researcher studied arthritis patients who were taught self-management skills by a trained lay person who also had arthritis. Four hundred patients with both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis participated in the controlled study. The participants were given six two-hour sessions on how to increase their sense of control and capability despite the arthritis.

The study showed that improved self-efficacy could indeed be learned. Among the patients:

bullet

Quality of life improved substantially.

bullet

Pain was reduced by 20 percent.

bullet

There was an actual decrease in symptoms-there was less inflammation and fewer swollen joints.

bullet

Medical office visits were reduced by 43 percent.

bullet

Costs over a four-year period were reduced substantially.
