Natural Remedies for Immunity

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like nutrient that plays a fundamental role in immunity and overall health. It is one of the top five heart medications prescribed in Japan. It is also used widely in Europe.

People suffering from serious diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, routinely have below normal levels of CoQ10.

CoQ10 functions as a powerful antioxidant, much like other antioxidant nutrients, such as vitamins C and E. It has found to have beneficial effects in treating infections and against deadly bacterial infections. Co Q10 is a great Complementary therapy for Cancer.

CoQ10 and Infections

CoQ10 marshals the body's immune system against infectious organisms. Several animal studies have shown the positive effect of CoQ10 in counteracting the effects of bacterial infection.

CoQ10 does not produce more immune cells. CoQ10 supercharges the immune cells, making them more efficient germ killers. (1,2)

CoQ10 was also found to be of value in the treatment of sepsis, the bacterial infection and poisoning of the blood. (3)

When you contract severe infections, it stress the immune system. Extreme fatigue (and chronic fatigue syndrome) sometimes follows infections of influenza, Epstein-Barr, and other viruses.(5) It's possible that fighting the infection wipes out the body's store of CoQ10 and other nutrients involved.

Natural Sources for CoQ10

Virtually every unprocessed food contains CoQ10 or closely related molecules, but the amounts vary greatly. The richest dietary sources of CoQ10 are organ meats, particularly heart, liver and kidneys. Vegetables and fruits contain CoQ10, but in very small amounts.

Recommended Dosage

To maintain general health and to reduce your risk of disease, take 10 to 30 milligrams of CoQ10 daily. To enhance the absorption of Co Q10, take it with a small amount of oily or fatty food-oil and vinegar dressing on a salad, a piece of bread with butter, some peanut butter, or a regular meal.

For the treatment of cancer, use 200 to 400 milligrams daily (in divided doses). You should be under the care of a physician. CoQ10 will reduce the cardiotoxicity of some of the chemotherapeutic drugs used in cancer treatment.

In the treatment of HIV and full-blown AIDS infections, take 200 to 400 milligrams daily. The lower range should be sufficient for people with asymptomatic HIV infections. The higher range might benefit people with AIDS, especially if they also suffer cardiovascular complications.

CoQ10 is very safe.

However, if you are taking ACE inhibitors, beta- blockers, or digitalis to treat a heart condition, you may be able to reduce your dose of these drugs after starting CoQ10. Do not, however, change your dose without consulting your physician.

Some cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as lovastatin, inhibit the body's production of CoQ10. If you are taking these drugs, you will need to increase your intake of CoQ10 supplementations.
