Herbal Tonics / Combinations

Balataila (Bala Taila, Bala Thailam)

Ingredients

root of S. cordifolia - 4 seers
water 32 seers
milk 9 seers
prepared sesame oil 4 seers
root paste of S. cordifolia - 1 seer

Procedure:

Add the root of S. cordifolia to water. Boil the mixture down to 3 seers. To this decoction add milk, prepared sesame oil and the root of S. cordifolia in the form of paste and prepare the oil. 

On the West Coast of Kerala State in India, this process of preparing the oil is repeated several times by adding fresh milk and a paste of the root-bark. This is repeated 14 to 101 times or more.

Application 

The oil is used for external application in nervous diseases. It has been used in facial paralysis, sciatica, both internally and externally and was found to be very efficacious in curing those diseases when they are due to inflammation of the nerves.

This oil, mixed with makaradhwaja and musk, is used as a cardiac tonic.
